Due to changes in the com.au policy now administered by auDA, appliations for generic .com.au names (previously reserved and unregisterable) are now being accepted via an auction process. This auction is open now and will close on 31 January 2001.

The list of generic names covers over 3,000 domain names including many popular and potentially commercially valuable words.

The auction process is being conducted via Stuff.com.au auction site directly with auDA.

Other requirements for com.au registration are still in place and in particular any applications/bids for the generic com.au names must have meet these requirements backdated to 13 August, 2001. In other words, if you are applying for a name on the basis that the generic name forms a part of your Australian company name, this company name must have been registered on or prior to 13 August, 2001. By way of example, if you want to apply for the name "wines.com.au" you will still need an Australian business name, company name or trademark registered on or prior to 13 August last year and containing the letters "WINES" in that order.

<*HEAD*>Multiple names acceptable While it was previously not permissible to obtain multiple com.au name licenses for one entity or registered name (e.g. business name), this restriction is also now being lifted. This means, for example, that if your organisation had previously compromised and registered a "less generic" name such as, say, winesaustralia.com.au, you can now apply for wines.com.au and still retain your established domain name, without fear of the former "one entity, one domain name" rule in the historical com.au policy.
