Phase 1 of the .biz registry is set to open on 21 May 2001. In this initial phase, no registrations are accepted as such, but holders of trademarks will have the opportunity to provide information on their trademark(s) to NeuLevel if they wish to do so. The trademark owner can claim intellectual property rights over a .biz domain name (providing that the trademark is identical to the alphanumeric string contained in the mark).

While these claims will not guarantee allocation of particular .biz name, NeuLevel will collate the various trademark claims into a database which will be used as part of the Phase 2 launch of .biz.

During Phase 2, when official pre-registrations will begin to be accepted, any exact matches between names being requested and the trademark database will be brought to the attention of the registrant. They will need to confirm that they are aware of the trademark claim before proceeding to full registration. If the applicant chooses to proceed with the registration, the trademark claimant will be notified once the name selection process is finalised and .biz goes live.

Trademark claimants will be notified of the contact details of any new registrants that clash with the claimed marks, and may contact the registrants at this point to attempt a resolution. The existing UDRP procedures can also be used, as well as special guidelines specifically formulated for .biz dispute resolution.
