The introduction of GST and the Australian Business Number (ABN) has brought about dramatic changes to the Australian business landscape. It has been widely embraced by the business community and has become a simple means by which business can interface with government. It also signifies a shift towards businesses utilising a single business identity.
In the past all Australian businesses wanting to establish their online identity needed to be a registered business or company and had to present a separate registration number to get a com.au domain. Now you can register com.au names for each of the Trading Names listed against your ABN.
The use of the ABN as proof of eligibility for a com.au name has been endorsed by the self-regulatory governing body, auDA. All applications still have to comply with the normal naming policies, but the advent of the ABN makes the process considerably easier.
Who can get an ABN?
Individuals
Companies
Superannuation funds
Statutory corporations
Financial Institutions
Foreign entities
Any other trading entity registered with an ABN
